Defend against checkmate: mix

In a game of chess, no one is going to tell what you should do to defend against checkmate. You have to figure it out yourself.
That’s why, in this lesson, we give you a short recap of all the defensive tricks you have learned so far. It is up to you to decide which method you use.

The example shows all possibilities in one chess position. Just have a look at it.

Always look for the main ways of defending:

  • Moving away
  • Protecting (mating square)
  • Capturing
  • Blocking or interposing

Consider all options. Then pick the best. The exercises will help you master this. Try to use the same method of thinking in a real game of chess. You will be able to escape from checkmate more often than you used to be!

What do you have to do?
Defend against mate. Choose the best way.

The black rook wants to checkmate on the green square. White can do several things to solve this problem:
  • His king can move away.
  • The rook can protect the mating square by moving to the first row.
  • The bishop can capture the black rook.
  • The white rook can be interposed between the black rook and the mating square.
All good solutions. But taking the rook is the best one. 5 points for White. Hurray!
